The Rogers Art Loft at The Lucy, a multi-disciplinary artist-in-residency program dedicated to inclusivity, creativity, and empowerment of artists, welcomes multi-talented and multi-instrument playing professional Jean Fineberg for a six-week artist-in-residency now through Nov. 3, 2021. While in Las Vegas, Fineberg will immerse herself in and engage with the community to explore a variety of musical topics and create a performance to share.Fineberg will host an Artist Talk on Friday, October 1 at 6 p.m., at Rogers Studio Gallery located downtown at 620 S. 7th St., to explain and discuss her music composition process, particularly as it relates to the 18-piece Jazz Orchestra and their Jazz/R&B octet, JAZZphoria. Additionally, Fineberg will host a free, two-part workshop “Demystifying the Blues,” for musicians and non-musicians of all ages. Universally popular, Fineberg will share the origins, form, and structure of The Blues.
The talented musician will cap off her time in Las Vegas with a culminating performance at Rogers Studio Gallery on Friday, October 29 at 6 p.m. Fineberg will perform a piece-in-progress with a local rhythm section and poems written while reflecting on their time at Rogers Art Loft.All events are free and open to the public. Based in New York, Jean Fineberg is a professional saxophonist and flutist, composer, and music educator, with a master’s from Penn State University and post-graduate study with David Baker at Indiana University. She specializes in researching music traditions from disparate cultures and reflecting and honoring them in her contemporary jazz works, which always include improvisation.She has been awarded Music Composition Residencies at the Ucross Foundation for the Arts (WY), Anderson Center for the Arts (MN), Studios of Key West (FL), Brush Creek Center for the Arts (WY), Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts (NE), Escape to Create (FL), The Helene Wurlitzer Foundation (NM) and Surel’s Place (ID).Fineberg received multiple music composition grants from the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music and Intermusic SF and fellowships from the NEA, ASCAP, and Meet the Composer. She served on the SanFrancisco Arts Commission Cultural Equity Panel and is profiled in eight published books, including “Feminists Who Changed America.” and a cover story in “Saxophone Journal.” She has recorded on more than 50 albums and toured with artists such as Melba Liston, Cornell Dupree, The Larry Elgart Band, David Bowie, Chic (“Freak Out”), Sister Sledge (“WeAre Family”), Laura Nyro, and others.
She has produced three albums, two containing her original material. Her compositions and performances are in regular rotation on KCSM, the San Francisco 24-hourJazz radio station. Her work has been performed at the 2016 Monterey Jazz Festival, the Kennedy Center in Wash. D.C., and the Grammys in Los Angeles. Four of her compositions were recently recorded at Skywalker Studios with four-time Grammy-winning engineer LeslieAnn Jones for an upcoming album release. Jean’s compositions are included in two upcoming albums, one by The Montclair Women’s Big Band (Jazz Orchestra) and one by JAZZphoria, her all-original music octet.Since launching with its inaugural roster of artists in June 2019, The Rogers Art Loft at The Lucy has successfully welcomed artists – both in-person and virtually – from a variety of disciplines including printmaking, sculpture, video and performance art, fiber arts, and collage, to share their creative insight and practice with the Las Vegas community. While the impactful artist-in-residency program pivoted to a digital format during the global pandemic, currently the Rogers Art Loft’s Artist-in-Residency program is an in-person experience.
