The Rogers Art Loft at The Lucy, a multi-disciplinary artist-in-residency program dedicated to inclusivity, creativity, and empowerment of artists, welcomes artist Zhiwan Cheung from China for a seven-week virtual artist-in-residency. Connecting digitally from China, Cheung will engage with local cultural workers and artists of color for his residency project entitled Seeing Color with Zhiwan Cheung: Las Vegas Edition.
During the residency, Cheung will host a robust schedule of engaging events including an artist talk, studio visit and culminating event. Additionally, Cheung will host a localized version of his ongoing podcast, Seeing Color and will include several live and recorded interviews to expand the area of what is a predominantly white space in the arts. With discussions shifting between art, race and colonialism, Cheung and guests will explore the creative process in a white-dominated art world.Zhiwan Cheung first got a taste of performing in front of a camera as a book reviewer for Reading Rainbow, the 1990’s television show advocating reading for children. Since then, Cheung has continued to probe the intersection of national identity and the personal psyche, focusing on how and where they join and diverge. As an odyssey toward a home that does not exist, a rite of passage with no destination, Zhiwan Cheung uses his work to search for a critical understanding of an impossible homecoming.

Since launching with its inaugural roster of artists in June 2019, The Rogers Art Loft at The Lucy has successfully welcomed artists – both in-person and virtually – from a variety of disciplines including printmaking, sculpture, video and performance art, fiber arts, and collage, to share their creative insight and practice with the Las Vegas community. While the impactful artist-in-residency program pivoted to a digital format during the global pandemic, for 2022 the Rogers Art Loft’s Artist-in-Residency program will be a hybrid of in-person experience and virtual programming. The premier artist-in-residency program encourages emerging artists, both national and international, to apply. Selected resident artists will have the opportunity to live and work in a first-of-its-kind creative community – The Lucy – in vibrant Downtown Las Vegas and will have access to creative workspace at the nearby Rogers Studio Gallery to present artist talks, performances, and exhibitions.
Dedicated to inclusivity, originality, and empowerment of artist, applications for the 2022 Artist-in-Residency program are now open and must be submitted by the deadline on July 15, 2021.
